World Wide Hachnasat Sefer Torah & Siyum
Rosh Chodesh Adar 5769 ~ February 24, 2009

Chaverim,

As Chanukah winds down, we celebrate and reinforce the process of transforming darkness into light. In this spirit, I would like to share details of an upcoming project in which I deeply encourage you to participate.

Nearly a year has passed since the tragic night, when a terrorist killed eight boys/young men from Yeshivat Mercaz Ha'Rav and Yeshivat Yerushalayim LeTze'irim. As the first anniversary of their untimely deaths approaches, the Jewish community is responding with an event that will be a true Kiddush Hashem.

To commemorate this tragedy, a new project, B'Lev Echad, hopes to unite the global Jewish community through a program of learning Torah and doing mitzvot in memory of those who died and devoted their lives to these causes. The project will culminate with a siyum and the dedication of eight Sifrei Torah at Yeshivat Mercaz HaRav with an inspiring program to be broadcasted live to all corners of the Jewish world. The event is scheduled to take place on the yartzheit, Rosh Chodesh Adar - February 24th 2009, and Jews around the world are being asked to participate in this worldwide siyum and join this event via a live Internet broadcast. There will also be an '8-for-8 Mitzvah Campaign" where each day leading up to this event will focus on a specific mitzvah in memory of the eight young men. Additional information about this project as well as the siyum can be found on the B'Lev Echad website.

I am especially proud of the several YU students and alumni who are part of this grassroots planning committee and the many more who already signed up to volunteer. By design, the B'Lev Echad project is not being funded by any specific organization, in the hopes that it will attract Jews from all across the religious spectrum, nor is it asking for any donations.

I encourage you, your school, or your community to be an active part of this unprecedented celebration of unity by watching the live broadcast, participating in a worldwide siyum, and joining the 8-for-8 mitzvah campaign. You can get more information, sign up your yeshiva, school or community, or sign up as a volunteer on the project's website: www.BlevEchad.com.

Kol tuv,

Kenneth Brander
